Shopping in Kisementi

This morning I walked up to Kamwokya Market in Kisementi in search of a tailor to turn my length of fabric printed with Obama's picture into a traditional African-style dress.  The market consists of a series of little shacks along a dirt road, only about 20 minutes from my apartment.  I stopped at a shop where an older woman was working at a sewing machine, but after I showed her the fabric and made my request she shook her head and her son took me to meet Bridget Nagawa, who runs a fashion and tailoring design shop a few doors down.  Bridget knew exactly what I wanted and took my measurements and the dress will be ready on Tuesday!  The whole thing, fabric, labor and all will only cost $40.

The walk back was filled with interesting encounters - banter with some boda boda drivers who wanted to know if I'd take them back to America with me (no!), purchasing a hand-hewn wooden spoon from a street vendor and my first opportunity to sample jackfruit (see post on Food).  I stopped at the Saturday farmers' market at MishMash, a trendy coffee shop-cum-art gallery to buy some flowers since I need a red boutonniere to wear at tomorrow's concert.

A very fruitful shopping expedition!
