Religion

Uganda is 85% Christian with a strong influence from Catholic missionaries.  There is also a sizable (11%) Islamic minority.  Today (June 3) is Ugandan Martyrs Day, a national holiday; pilgrims walk for weeks on end  from countries all over Africa to attend a service at the shrine at  Namugongo, about 12km west of Kampala to commemorate the martyrdom in 1886, of 26 Ugandan Christians, all servants at the King's court who were later canonized in 1964.  It was a horrible death - the martyrs were rolled up in reed mats (you see a lot of those used here for screens and shade) and piled up like human faggots before being burned alive.
